Why some clocks survived centuries in good condition, others did not

Every now and then an antique clock comes into the shop that feels oddly fresh. The gilt has a soft glow, the plates are square and honest, the train runs with that kind of unbothered confidence you cannot fake. Next to it, a near twin limps in with pitted brass, stretched pivot holes and a case that has had a hard life under hot pipes. Same age on paper, very different stories. I have stopped trying to smooth that contrast. Survival in horology is not fair. It is a cocktail of design, environment, and the strange luck of human habits.

There is the obvious bit. Better engineered clocks tend to age well. When seventeenth century makers swapped the old verge for the anchor escapement, the pendulum could swing in a smaller arc and keep steadier time. Less violence in each tick, less thrashing of the train, less wear. The point is simple. If a clock was born calm, it usually stayed calmer in old age. That said, plenty of modest country longcases have outlived fussier town pieces. Design helps. It does not guarantee anything.

Materials matter in quietly decisive ways. Thick plates buy you time because pivots have support and oil sinks hold, well, oil. Thin plates wear fast and the holes oval out, then someone busies up the workshop with a punch and a prayer. Brass quality varies. So does steel. A wheel cut cleanly and left alone will run for generations. A wheel polished thin by enthusiastic restorers ends up fragile, and then one dropped screw starts a bad day. Fusee driven spring clocks often age kindly because the fusee evens out the pull of a mainspring and the rest of the train does not get yanked around. Again, not a rule, but you do see the pattern.

The room is the silent accomplice. Good climate beats bad repair, nine times out of ten. Dry heat splits veneers, swollen humidity lifts them, and the endless seesaw of both cracks polish and joints alike. Metal hates sulphur and acids. Nineteenth century town houses full of coal smoke and later gas light were not a spa for brass or steel. The pollution was sticky and mildly aggressive. Even the timber around a movement can whisper trouble. Oak and board products exhale little puffs of acetic acid for years and those vapours nibble at metal surfaces. Museums fuss about this for good reason. In homes, a quiet corner with stable temperature and middling humidity is worth more than heroic polishes. Keep the sun off the case and keep the radiator at a courteous distance. Sounds boring. Saves clocks.

Lubrication is a wonderfully dull topic that decides who makes it to two hundred. Early clock oils were often animal based. They went gummy or sour. Movements that were oiled too often with the wrong stuff collected an abrasive paste in the pivots and wore hard. The cure was not no oil at all, despite a few stubborn myths, but small amounts of decent oil in the right places and long intervals between services. If a movement ran with low friction and tight bushings, it needed less help. If it had been drilled, plugged, redrilled and bathed, it never really recovered its poise. There is a particular look to a plate that has met too many bodges. You know it when you see it.

Ownership is the wild card. Some clocks lived in studies where someone dusted the case with a soft cloth and left the rest alone. Others spent a century over a damp hearth or under a window that wept every winter. Some were unlucky enough to be fashionable right when over polishing was fashionable too. A few were blessed by caretakers who did almost nothing beyond winding and a service every decade. Ordinary kindness keeps time. It does not show up in the catalogues, but it does in the pivots.

There are odd survivals that defy the neat list. A workhorse shop clock with scarred plates will run like a cart horse long after a delicate salon piece has become an exhibition of repairs. A provincial longcase with a sensible anchor escapement, decent wheels, thick plates and a case of good timber, kept away from damp and soot and over helpful hands, can be a better long bet than an urban marvel that lived under gas light and fashion. Not a tidy moral, I know. Real clocks are like that.

If you own one, here is the short, slightly bossy advice. Place it where air is steady and light is kind. Wind it on the same day each week and do not wrench the key. Dust the case gently. If a strike goes ragged or a pendulum sulks, resist the heroic tweak with a butter knife. Get it looked at, and ask for the lightest touch that solves the real problem. It is not romantic, but clocks that last are often the ones spared from well meant fussing. Good manners, in the end, are a preservation strategy.

The long view is comforting. We make a lot of noise about famous names and clever mechanisms and that is fair enough. But the clocks that reach us in good heart usually got three simple gifts. A calm mechanism at birth, a civilised room, and owners who did enough and then stopped. Everything else is detail, some of it shiny, some of it sad, all of it interesting on a bench covered in very clean rags.
